Inception (2010) is a science fiction action thriller written, directed, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan (with his wife Emma Thomas).
Core Premise
Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled “extractor”—a thief who uses experimental shared-dream technology to infiltrate people’s subconscious minds and steal secrets (corporate espionage). He is offered a chance at redemption: perform the seemingly impossible reverse process known as inception—planting an idea deep in someone’s mind so they believe it is their own. Success would clear a murder charge against him and allow him to return home to his children.
The target is Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), heir to a powerful energy conglomerate. Cobb’s client, Japanese businessman Saito (Ken Watanabe), wants the idea of dissolving the company implanted in Fischer’s mind. Cobb assembles a specialized team and descends through multiple layered dreams, where time dilates dramatically (minutes in the upper level can equal hours or years deeper down). The mission is complicated by Cobb’s own guilt-ridden subconscious projections of his deceased wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard).
